Function of Solids Control
The solids control system utilizes physical methods to remove solid particles from the drilling mud to ensure the performance of the drilling mud and reduce the occurrence of drilling accidents. Effectively save drilling costs and maximize economic benefits.
Components of Solids Control System
A complete solids control system including mud mixing and store units (mud tank, agitator, mud gun), solids removal units (shale shaker, hydrocyclone removal equipment, centrifuge), auxiliary devices and lines.
Mank tanks are classified into trip tanks, circulation tanks, weighting tanks, mixing tanks, storage tanks, etc., according to different usage.
Solids removal equipment, including five-stage purification equipment: shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, and decanter centrifuge. A mud degasser and mud desilter can be combined with a shaker as a mud cleaner.
Auxiliary equipment mainly means centrifugal pumps and other accessory parts, like the electrical panel, and so on. According to function, centrifugal pumps can be used as a desander pump, desilter pump, mixing pump, trip pump, and metering pump.
Working Procedure Of Solids Control System
Drilling mud from the drill hole will feed into the shale shaker buffer box by pipeline, and the shaker can install shaker screen mesh API 35 to API 120 to separate larger drilling cuttings. The fluid part will drop into the sand trap through the mesh screen.
Mud from the sand trap will overflow into the next compartment, and the vacuum degasser will suction mud to the degasser, and treated mud will overflow into the degasser compartment.
The desander feeding pump will pick up mud from degasser compartment and feed it into the desander cyclone for 47 – 76 micron separation. The solids part will drop from the desander nozzle, and fluids will overflow into the desander compartment.
Another will pick up mud from the desander compartment and feed the desilter cyclone, solids part drop through the desilter nozzle, and fluids overflow into the desilter compartment.
A slurry pump or screw pump then picks up mud from the desilter compartment into the decanter centrifuge for 2 – 7 micron separation and cleans the mud flow into the centrifuge compartment.
All tank compartments after the desilter compartment are named as clean mud; the mixing pump can suction or discharge to any of the clean mud tanks for mud transfer or new mud mixing.

The surface is interpreted with sandblasting. The in-tank is painted with intense anti-corrosion bituminous paint, and outside of the tank is painted with oil-proof and acid and alkali-resistant paint.
